“Linebreaker” is usually the assignment of the senior firefighter on the rig. Responsible for hopping off the apparatus, breaking the line by disconnecting the nearest coupling from the backstep, spinning it onto the supply inlet, calling for water, and getting the first attack line moving fast. It’s one of the most important jobs on the fireground — speed, timing, and experience all rolled into one.
